Honouring the Land: An Open Mic Night in K'emk'emeláY/Vancouver

Join Living Hyphen for our first storytelling event in K'emk'emeláy̓/Vancouver where we will share stories honouring the precious land, environment, and ecosystems that give life to us all.

As hyphenated individuals who call the nation-state of “Canada” home, but who also have roots elsewhere, how do we connect to the land – the physical, literal earth that we and/or our ancestors have traversed? What is your relationship to the ground you once walked on (wherever that may be) or that you walk on today?

As we continue to live through compounding climate catastrophes around the globe, and as we continue to bear witness to multiple genocides and ecocides perpetrated by colonial and imperial powers, this gathering is a space to reshift and refocus our energy on a higher power. Through our gifts of storytelling and listening, we honour our precious land, water, air, and all the ecosystems of our diverse world.

The intersections of climate and racial justice are undeniable. We remind ourselves why we must act now to fight the climate crisis and labour for the flourishing of our future generations. We hope you will join us in sparking deeper conversations for change in our communities while also celebrating where we are today.

Date and Time: Wednesday, April 30 | 7:30-9:30 p.m.

Location: Teck Gallery, SFU Harbour Centre | 555 West Hastings St.

This space is fully accessible. Accessible and all-gender washrooms are available.

We invite our attendees to come prepared with a 5(ish) minute story to share with our community. We will randomly select storytellers to take the stage to speak their stories. Each randomly selected performer will be given an honorarium of $50. All levels of experience and works-in-progress are warmly welcomed!

We strive to cultivate a supportive space for courageous and tender storytelling and to bear witness to each other’s lived experiences in all their complexity.
